Summarise a document without losing the caveats

Use a tiny fictional policy so that checking the output is manageable. The important skill is knowing what the document does, and does not, say.

You’ll make: A source-checked summary and a list of open questions.

STEP 01

Use this fictional source

Section 1: From 1 April, staff should submit expense claims within 30 days of purchase. Section 2: Claims above $250 require manager approval. Section 3: Receipts are required for all claims. Missing receipts are reviewed individually by Finance. Section 4: This draft policy has not been approved. No effective year or appeal process is specified.

STEP 02

Ask for a grounded summary

Paste the source into an approved chat tool with the prompt below. For longer practice documents, file upload may be available. Use text-based files rather than scanned images when precise details matter.
Try this prompt
Summarise the following fictional draft policy in no more than 80 words. Preserve its approval status, thresholds and exceptions. For each factual claim, cite its section number. Then list unanswered questions; do not fill in missing information. Source: [paste the four sections above]

Paste into your approved AI tool. This site does not call an AI model.

STEP 03

Check every claim

The threshold is above $250, not $250 or above. Thirty days runs from purchase, not submission. Missing receipts trigger individual review, not automatic rejection. Most importantly, this is an unapproved draft.

STEP 04

Keep the uncertainty visible

Your summary should say “The draft proposes…” rather than “Staff must…”. Open questions include approval status, the effective year and the appeal process. If the AI supplies answers, remove them unless they appear in the source.

STEP 05

Keep the source alongside the summary

Save the source, a summary of no more than 80 words, and a claim-by-claim check. This demonstrates careful review rather than a claim to have written a real company policy.

Section 2 says above $250. Do not silently change a strict threshold into an inclusive one.

ONLY AFTER YOU’VE DONE THE WORK

A truthful way to describe it

In a fictional policy exercise, I used AI to produce a short summary, checked each claim against the source and preserved the draft status, threshold and unanswered questions.

Use this only if it accurately describes your completed practice. Adapt it to the tool and checks you actually used. It is not a certificate or a claim of professional experience.
